Books That Make Us

If you, like me, are a true book lover and are easily effected by them, you know that there are some books that just make you think and reevaluate your whole life and all of your life decisions and help you decide all of the things you want to do in your life, who you want to be, who you want to be with, and make you contemplate things in life you may not have ever though about before. I have read so many books like that, and in my opinion the ones that make you doubt everything you know and change you, are the ones that are worth reading. These are a couple of mine.

This book, to shortly sum it up to those who have not yet read it, is about a father and daughter who have the ability, if they read a book aloud, to read characters and objects out of books and read other people into them. This causes problems and there is a trilogy based off of this basic idea. This book is one of the best that I have ever read. One of my favorite quotes, one that really made me think comes from this book.

“If you take a book with you on a journey,” Mo had said when he put the first one in her box, “an odd thing happens: The book begins collecting your memories. And forever after you have only to open that book to be back where you first read it. It will all come into your mind with the very first words: the sights you saw in that place, what it smelled like, the ice cream you ate while you were reading it… yes, books are like flypaper—memories cling to the printed page better than anything else.”

They go on to discuss how this is the reason that books always tend to look a bit bigger each time you read them, because more and more memories keep getting caught in the pages and more and more thoughts stuck between the lines. This book is about a family of book lovers and I would really recommend everyone to read it.

Looking for Alaska and The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

I have already made multiple posts about each of these books and my thoughts on them so I won’t bother you with repeating myself more than I already have. These books have really had a huge effect on me and the way that I think of things in my life. They make you think about love and loss and what is really important in your life.

There are countless others, I am sure. Those are simply the ones that come to mind. Books can change and effect your thinking and make you think in ways you never thought possible. Feel free to comment any books that made you re think some things and I’d love to read them c:

Yes, I am well aware of how utterly cheesy and cliché it sounds, but it is so unbelievably true! Due to recent stressful events, I have been in dire need of a looooooooong vacation preferably by myself to somewhere exotic and far away. Than it hit me, ah ha! I can do that for free!

Books are an amazing thing, and if you’re reading this reading blog, you must already agree with this fact. Just think how wonderful it is that you can be sitting on your bed, in class, in an airport, or anywhere at all and by the swift aft of opening a cover or an app, be transported to another place and another time instantaneously. If you’re having a bad day, simply open Harry Potter and you can be at Hogwarts running around and causing mischief. Or open a John Green book and be in Amsterdam with Hazel and Augustus or pulling off the best prank ever with Pudge and friends.

The immediate world may be limited because of school, work, family or anything. But within a book you can do anything or be anything. You can make friends and enemy’s, fall in love with the characters and learn to love to hate others, you can solve mysteries and bring out a side of you that you didn’t know that you had. The possibilities are endless.

So next time you have a day (or year) like I have, simply curl up with a warm cup of tea in you’re favourite spot and open up a book. Be prepared to be transported to another world, where anything is possible and somehow magically at least for a little while you’re troubles, worries, and problems seem to get hidden between the words and pages of the book as you yourself get lost in the story.

Yo-Yo Eating

To many people out there diets can come and go and change at the top of a hate if you either don’t see results quick enough or a big enough of a result. So you switch your diet and find another crash diet to loose weight fast with hopefully minimal troubles. Studies though show that this type of eating can become very harmful for health reasons for people who often switch diets back and forth because of the lack of certain nutrients and the unexpected gain of others your body may not gain all of what it needs to be truly healthy.
An article that I found on Fitness Magazine kind of shows and displays in more detail the effect of yoyo dieting. It has experts and doctors that they have talked it overtime that have relayed just how bad the effects can be if you abuse different forms of crash diets.

Repeated crash dieting increases metabolic hormones, such as insulin, and elevates levels of sex hormones, including estrogen,” says Andrea Pennington, MD, author of The Pennington Plan for Weight Success. “These changes cause you to start putting on weight around your middle, which research has linked to insulin resistance, diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.”

This is one of the concerning factors that they bring into the argument against yoyo dieting. I agree that these things can be very bad for your health and when not done properly or overseen properly that crash dieting and yoyo dieting can be very bad for someone. I also believe though that with the right supervision that if you take enough vitamins and make sure to get the very basic amounts of each needed nutrient and keep your calcium, iron, and protein levels up that it is possible to succeed at a crash diet.

Reading Encouraged In Schools

Everybody remembers the horror of reading the novels in their high school language arts classes; trying to decipher Romeo and Juliet and attempting to get through the boring books with long sentences to later give up and simply use sparknotes. This idea is engraved in almost every person who has once been a high school students brain. That a really sad though isn’t it, that the one thing most people remember about their language arts classes is being forced to read things that they have no interest for. This idea has possibly caused resentment for the idea of reading in many younger generations. Reading used to be the most common and enjoyed past time of people and now it has been placed as the un cool or rejected thing to do in some situations. That’s a sad thought isn’t it? I think that one place to start giving people a good idea of reading should be in the schools.

When children first begin reading should we give them a good and supportive idea of it? I believe that schools are the most influential part of a child’s life when reading can come into hand because their education can effect their likes and dislikes. Throughout their school lives students are forced to read book after book for classes. Most of the time these books are hard for them to understand and are not within the common interests of people. This would put anybody off of reading if they were forced to read something that they didn’t enjoy. I believe that schools should make more choices available to students on book projects and such so they are more interested in the subject and have more of a desire to learn and participate. This will also make the activity of reading enjoyable.

If children are forced to only read certain books in school without having anytime to read anything else it could give them the wrong idea and opinion of reading not only at school but in their free time also. If children in schools are allowed more and mandatory time to read their own books in class it might encourage them to take it up as a hobby if they are shown that there are books about any subject for any area of interest.

Artificial Perservatives

Have you ever looked at the ingredients label on your favourite snack foods that you grab from the cupboard without even thinking? If you haven’t yet, I would highly suggest it, you might be in for a big shock. There is a big debate out in the nutritional world about the effects of artificial preservatives on our bodies and diets. Preservatives are things that are not naturally found in the world or in our food that are not put in for nutritional reasons but for things such as colour and appearance. There is much debate over weather there are underling effects of these and it’s amazing to see how much of these are found in everyday life and what the possible effects of them are. It’s amazing and scary to see the things that your foods could be doing to you without you even realizing it. Personally I believe that theses preservatives can have an effect on us and that we should try to eat all natural although there are some overreactions about the exact effects of said items. I decided to check out some things in my cupboard. This is a Kraft Mac and Cheese microwave meal that was in my house and the ingredients in it.

That’s a lot of ingredients for such a simple thing, that should be one tip off that your food probably isn’t the best thing for you to be eating, I found a website that gives a very good argument and examples of some ingredients that could be harming you and the effects here. This list has a lot of things for you to look out and maybe think twice about. Now I compared the list to the meal I found in my house.

One of the biggest issues with additives is the food coloring. It is one of the biggest complaints and possible ingredients that hurt us the most. These additives are not necessary for the food to be stable and good tasting. All these do is simply change the colors and make them look more appealing. These foods can cause sluggish feelings, cause some people to not be able to think as well, constipation and just have our bodies not run as smoothly. I personally would advice people to be more aware of the ingredients in the foods that they consume. I would rather be healthy and happy than have my food look a brighter shade of yellow, but hey, that’s just me. Happy cooking and eating c:

Pros and Cons of an Animal Free Diet

There are many debates through out the pro and anti animal product communities about the health benefits or hindrances of being a vegan or not. There are good points to both sides and most of the time it simply depends on how you chose to do your diet. You can still be healthy while being vegan. While you would think it would be hard, but it is actually very possible to over eat while being a vegan. If you eat a bunch of potato chips and foods like those you will not be as healthy as you probably were before you made the switch. On the flipside if you only eat broccoli for every meal you will not get all the needed nutrients to be healthy and safe. There are many health pros to becoming a vegan. One of the main things that persuades people to become vegan is the weight loss. This restricts your diet so much that a majority of the people who do the diet correctly will lose weight and feel better with more energy. Although for this to be successful you have to have a source of protein that isn’t too many calories so you aren’t hungry all day and don’t keep eating trying to feel full. One of the other main benefits is the environmental benefits that help. Most vegans are more conscious of the emissions they create and stuff like that, which makes the world a little cleaner at a time.

The main argument against the health of a vegan diet is getting enough vitamins and nutrients in your diet to remain healthy. Since you remove many sources of iron, calcium and many other important nutrients in your normal everyday diet, you will need to find a way to replace those. I, and most people who are vegan, will take multi vitamins every morning. Those are very good in supplying all of the ones that you will need. I also take a B12 and calcium supplement. Those are supposed to be very good and helpful for you also.

So long story short, in my opinion the benefits outweigh the health risks because if you are smart and do it right, you will feel so much healthier and better than before.
